Simply Trust God's Promises

When Jeremiah had finished saying everything the Lord had commanded him to say to all the people, then the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him and said, “You must die! Jeremiah 26:8

I have been in some tough conversations in my decades in the ministry. But I have never undergone the situation Jeremiah faced. I have had people hate me enough to wish me harm but have never had anyone want to take my life.

God called Jeremiah to a thankless ministry. Jeremiah told the people exactly what the Lord had commanded him to say. Jerusalem would be destroyed. Judah would go into exile. And all that they would face in the future would be their own fault. Choose your future: famine, disease, execution, or exile. To make matters worse, the people were surrounded by false prophets preaching a message of peace. Though the message of doom came from God, for preaching this message the priests, prophets, and people demanded Jeremiah’s life.

Should we expect it to be any different in our day and age? The people of the world are surrounded by false prophets. Countless so-called christian churches exist which deny the Trinity, deny the resurrection, and deny that warning people about their sin has a place in our world. Yes, warning with the law seems out of place to a people who at best are willing to thank God for a splendid sunrise. No wonder people hate us and accuse us of hate when we bring them a message of impending judgment and eternal death for their actions.

So are we to give up? Not at all. Let us ask God to steel our resolve as He did for Jeremiah. We have been promised by our Lord that His word will always accomplish a purpose. Our part in sharing the word is not to try to figure out what that purpose is. We are, like Jeremiah, to simply trust God’s promises. We will face opposition, hatred, and name calling. But it is better that we face these than that others face an eternity separated from God.
